AVAA’s 35th Anniversary Show
Thursday, February 2nd is the Austin Visual Artist Association’s 35th Anniversary Exhibition at the Dougherty Arts Center in Austin. My two paintings “A Festive Spirit” and “Sunflowers and Cantaloupe” are in this juried show. I’m sure I’ll see old AVAA friends at the reception.
Beneath the Blue
Beneath the Blue, or The Mermaid Show, begins January 20, 2012 with a reception from 5 til 8 at Salado Winesellers. I have three paintings in this show, with five other women artists.
Mermaid Show in January
The painting I’m calling “Moonlit Mermaid” is almost finished in my studio. I started this one with acrylic, then glazed several layers of transparent oil paint over the figure, followed by darker glazes over the blues in the water.
A silver leafed moon further enlivens the surface of this cool colors painting. It’s destined for The Mermaid Show in Salado, Texas in January. I like it!
SPUNC Exhibition in Temple
The SPUNC Show at the Cultural Activities Center in Temple, Texas showcases artwork by six full-of-spunc women. My “Flowers and Lila” oil painting shows up well in the light in the Upstairs Gallery. This show runs through mid-December.
Oil Painters of America Paintout
This year’s Oil Painters of America plein air paintout at The Oasis at Lake Travis brought some rainy skies and close values. My painting of the lake includes the big sandbars that appeared this year, and Mansfield Dam and water towers, plus the lighthouse at Lakeway, in the background.
Published!
Today the multi-talented Linda Scott brought me a copy of the newly-published book entitled “The Crossroads,” by author Mattie D. Turner.
The front and back covers of the book feature one of my landscape paintings, “A Path Nearby,” painted near where I live and work. So happy the painting’s bright colors show up so beautifully!
Le Creuset Painting This Weekend
Le Creuset was the site of my weekend painting excursion this Labor Day weekend. Today a lady from Temple won my painting, “Tea Time.”
Rocky Mountain National Park Painting
This week I’m painting in Rocky Mountain National Park and staying in a cottage in Estes Park, Colorado. It’s gorgeous here!
Artists-in-Action Rocks Salado
This weekend two events rocked the Village of Salado. The reception for artists at Salado Wine Sellers on Friday night was well attended and fun for those of us who were exhibiting, and the Artisis-in-Action paintout on Saturday brought in more wine lovers and art patrons.
Workshop News
We’re in the midst of a late-July workshop with Peter and Cynthia from Kerrville this week at the Round Rock studio. Several wonderful paintings are sitting around the floor and leaning against easels.
My demo today was suggested by Cynthia. We set up a simple still life, and here is the result. We like it!

Today I am gallery sitting at Artisans in Taylor, Texas. Two of my oil paintings appear in this photo, taken inside the gallery. The oil painting at the top is “Chameleon,” almost a monochrome, with added color in interesting areas.
The small book on the left shows a young Indian girl on the front cover, painted in oils. It has blank pages inside and a gold leafed back cover.

It was a fun evening last night. As the featured artist for this year’s Georgetown Red Poppy Festival, I was asked to make a presentation to the Williamson County Art Guild at The Windberg Center. Some of the artwork and features of my website were projected on a screen, and questions from Guild members kept the pace lively. Thank you Guild members!

It’s great being the featured artist for the 2011 Georgetown Red Poppy Festival. I am having so much fun giving away posters with my “Red “Poppies” painting on them, and enjoying my “15 minutes of fame,” to quote Andy Warhol.
The View magazine just published an article about me in their April issue, the Williamson County Sun newspaper ran an article and color photo, and my ad appears in Focus on Georgetown magazine’s April issue. On Tuesday night, I’ll give a presentation to the Williamson County Art Guild, and I’m teaching a workshop on “Poppies with Patricia” at Artisans Gallery in Taylor on April 22nd. Hang on tightly!

Today is Chinese Calligraphy painting, or writing. I am writing a poem with Chinese ink on shuan (Xuen) paper in my studio.
I am studying this ancient form of Chinese Calligraphy at The Great Wall Chinese School in Austin. My teacher, Mrs. Yang, speaks no English and I speak no Chinese, but we communicate through the beautiful strokes of Chinese Calligraphy. I feel privileged to write these symbols of words, as calligraphy is both Art and Language.
In April, my work will be part of an exhibifion of Chinese Calligraphy at the Austin Public Library. I feel honored to have work included in this show.
The First Post
This is my first post, as I try to figure out how to use WordPress.
Since the banners went up around the square in Georgetown yesterday and they feature my “Red Poppies” painting advertising the upcoming Georgetown 2011 Red Poppy Festival, I think that a picture of one of the banners will fit nicely here. I hope you agree.
